SB1174 prohibits local governments from requiring voters to present identification to vote or submit a ballot at any polling place, vote center, or other ballot-submission location.

The California State Assembly passed SB1174 on August 27, 2024 by a vote of 57 to 16. We have assigned pluses to the nays because voter ID laws are essential for preserving the integrity of our election process. Repealing such laws undermines election integrity. Article IV, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution guarantees that “citizens” of the United States “shall be entitled to all privileges and immunities,” including the right to vote as outlined in the 26th Amendment. Eliminating voter ID requirements infringes on these constitutional protections and weakens safeguards designed to ensure fair elections.
