HB217 creates a Class 1 misdemeanor to import, sell, manufacture, purchase, or transfer an "assault firearm"; and to import, sell, barter, transfer, or purchase a "large capacity ammunition feeding device" that holds, or can be readily converted to hold, more than 15 rounds.

The Virginia Senate passed HB217 on March 9, 2026 by a vote of 21 to 19. We have assigned pluses to the nays because the fundamental right of the American people to keep and bear arms is protected by the U.S. Constitution, particularly in the Second, Ninth, and 10th Amendments, and should not be infringed. HB217 is a gross infringement on that right.
