SB1461 would have continued the Oklahoma Educational Television Authority until July 1, 2031, rather than allowing it to expire in 2026.

The Oklahoma State Senate failed to override the governor's veto of SB1461 on May 14, 2026 by a vote of 27 to 18 (a two-thirds majority was required). We have assigned pluses to the nays because, as Governor Kevin Stitt stated in his veto message, "funding a television station is not a core function of state government." Such activities are properly left to the free market and private enterprise, not subsidized through compulsory taxation. Public broadcasting, even at the state level, fosters government influence over news and culture, contrary to the limited-government framework established by the Founders. SB1461 continues this inappropriate use of public funds instead of allowing private citizens and voluntary organizations to support educational programming as they choose.
