HB1471 prohibits a court from applying or enforcing any provision of "foreign or religious law," including "Sharia law," that would result in a violation of a person's rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution or the Florida Constitution.

The Senate passed HB1471 on March 5, 2026, by a vote of 25 to 11. We have assigned pluses to the yeas because the U.S. Constitution is and must remain the "supreme Law of the Land." Sharia law is not only incompatible with the Constitution, but repugnant to America's founding principles and Christian heritage. As John Adams affirmed, the principles on which the United States achieved independence were the "general Principles of Christianity," not Islam. Moreover, the Continental Congress in 1777, echoing the Mayflower Compact, called "for the promotion and enlargement of that kingdom" of "Jesus Christ," not Muhammad. In other words, America was founded on the Bible, not the Quran. While our nation's 250-year-old war with Islam continues, "We the People" need to remember that the Constitution was done "in the Year of our Lord," on the assumption that Christ is Lord. Even the First Amendment, according to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story, an appointee of James Madison, was written "not to countenance, much less to advance Mahometanism … by prostrating Christianity; but to exclude all rivalry among Christian sects." Thus, there can and should be no doubt as to why the Supreme Court in 1892, in Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States, unanimously determined that America "is a Christian nation."
